Play, Pools, and Prevention: What to Do in a Pediatric Dental Emergency This Summer

Summer is one of kids’ favorite seasons: free time, camps, long afternoons at the pool, outdoor sports, and plenty of active play. That rise in physical activity and energy, however, also raises the chances of a mouth injury. At Clover Hills Dentistry, we have a team specialized in pediatric dentistry, ready to check, care for, and treat any pediatric dental emergency. Dr. Alexander Ochoa Falla is a board-certified Pediatric Dentist and Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, with specific training in dental trauma, and together with his team he provides warm, compassionate care when your child needs it most.

The summer lifestyle and the risks of a dental emergency

The season brings fun, but also situations that can lead to an emergency:

  • Intense sports and play: falls from bikes or skates and accidental hits from balls are very common this time of year.
  • Afternoons at the pool: running along wet pool edges raises the risk of slips and falls.
  • Summer cravings and habits: chewing ice to cool off or biting hard candy can cause microfractures in the enamel.

The most common summer dental emergencies

Knowing the situations that come up most often this season helps you act in time. If your child has any of them, the best step is to contact Clover Hills Dentistry right away so the team can check and treat it:

  • Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth: a hard hit during sports, a fall from a bike, or a slip by the pool can knock a tooth out completely. This is one of the emergencies that needs the fastest attention, so contact us immediately.
  • Broken, chipped, or displaced tooth: a direct impact or biting something hard can fracture or move a tooth. Visit us so we can check and treat it in time.
  • Tooth pain or severe pain: sudden pain or pain that won’t go away can be a sign of a deep cavity or an infection. A timely evaluation keeps it from advancing, and in some cases it may call for a root canal (endodontic treatment). Don’t wait for the pain to get worse: book as soon as possible.
  • Injuries to the lips, gums, or jaw: falls and blows can hurt the soft tissues of the mouth. Let us evaluate the injury to rule out anything more serious.
  • Object stuck between the teeth: if it doesn’t come out easily, avoid using sharp objects and let the team remove it safely.

One important note: if the blow was hard or affected the head and neck, go to the emergency room first to rule out a concussion, then contact us to check your child’s oral health.

Prevention is the foundation of a happy summer

Although we are ready to handle emergencies, prevention is always the priority. The sooner parents build the habit of regular dental check-ups and cleanings, the healthier their children’s mouths will stay throughout their lives. Scheduling a visit with Dr. Alexander Ochoa Falla before vacations or camps lets the team check your child’s oral health and address any sign it observes in time. A few simple measures make a difference: wearing a mouthguard for contact sports, supervising play near pools, avoiding chewing ice and hard candy, and keeping up good daily hygiene.
