While it’s normal for primary teeth to fall out throughout childhood, adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime. Most general dentistry services rely on maintaining excellent oral health and avoiding tooth loss. But, sometimes, it’s better to extract an unhealthy tooth to avoid additional problems.
Clover Hills Dentistry proudly serves the Mission, TX, area with quality dental services. Dr. Alexander Ochoa Falla and Dr. Jo-Ann Collantes provide general dental care to children, adults, and families, helping to maintain oral health and perform comfortable tooth extractions when necessary. Our team is passionate about providing the highest level of care for all our patients, ensuring you receive the best service every time.
You might be surprised that dental extraction offers numerous advantages. Most notably, professionally pulling an infected tooth removes harmful bacteria that ruin your teeth and gums and cause a domino effect of oral health problems. Also, those who are suffering from severe tooth pain can find relief with an emergency tooth extraction. When a tooth cannot be remedied by other means, removing a severely infected or damaged tooth gives the patient the best chance of regaining their oral health.
Delivering dental care with empathy and kindness is vital to patients of all ages. Once you sit in one of our comfortable dental chairs, here’s what one can expect:
Generally, Dr. Ochoa and Dr. Collantes do not suggest tooth extraction unless it is a last-resort treatment. Part of preparing for tooth extraction is ensuring that there are no other treatment options, like endodontic treatment. We accomplish this by taking x-rays and performing a physical exam.
If pulling a tooth is the best treatment route, we do what we can to ensure that the patient feels comfortable and prepared. We can provide sedation dentistry and numbing agents to help patients of all ages feel more secure and have virtually no pain during the tooth extraction.
Dental extractions can be simple or complex.
Simple extractions are for visible teeth that require removal. The dentist lifts the tooth by the crown out of the socket with a specialized dental tool called an elevator.
Complex extractions require a few more steps. Commonly, this type of dental extraction is used for impacted or partially erupted teeth. First, the dentist must cut into the gum line and remove the entire tooth from the socket.
If necessary, your dentist will suture the gumline together to improve tooth extraction healing.
After pulling a tooth, your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions, including diet changes, new prescriptions, and other standards to aid healing and prevent tooth extraction infection.
