5 Signs Your Tooth Pain Might Need a Root Canal

A tooth pain that keeps you up at night, shows up when you chew, or comes back again and again is not something to ignore. Sometimes it’s a passing discomfort, but other times it’s the way your tooth signals that something deeper is happening inside. When the pain shows up, it’s natural to worry and look for answers. These five signs can help you recognize when a tooth pain might point to the need for a root canal, so you can act in time and with a clear head.

1. Persistent pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure

Pain that won’t go away, that returns, or that gets worse when you bite often points to the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth where the nerve is, being inflamed or infected. Unlike a momentary discomfort, this kind of pain tends to come back and grow more noticeable over time.

2. Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

This isn’t the brief twinge you feel when you sip something cold, but the kind that lasts several seconds after the drink or food is gone. That sensitivity that “stays” is one of the most classic signs that the tooth’s nerve could be affected.

3. Swollen or tender gums near the tooth

Swelling, tenderness to the touch, or a bump on the gum that drains and comes back can point to an infection, a possible sign of an abscess. It’s one of the signs worth checking as soon as possible.

4. Darkening or change in the tooth’s color

When a tooth turns grayish or looks darker than the ones next to it, it can be a sign that the inner nerve is damaged. This color change is sometimes subtle, so it’s worth paying attention to in the mirror.

5. Chipped, cracked, or deeply decayed tooth

A crack, a fracture, or a cavity that reaches the pulp opens the door to bacteria. In these cases, endodontic treatment is often what allows the infection to be removed and the natural tooth to be saved before the damage advances.

An important clarification

These signs are a guide to act in time, not a diagnosis. In fact, a tooth can need a root canal even with no pain at all, which is why only a professional evaluation with X-rays can confirm it. If you recognize one or more of these signs, the wisest step is to schedule a checkup and let the team observe what’s going on.

A root canal doesn’t cause the pain: it takes it away

Many people dread the word “root canal,” but the reality is the opposite of what they imagine. The pain doesn’t come from the treatment, but from the infection already inside the tooth. A root canal removes that infection, relieves the pain, and saves your natural tooth. At Clover Hills Dentistry, Dr. Jo-Ann Collantes performs endodontic treatment together with the team, with a close, caring approach designed to keep the process comfortable and clear.
